Compassionate Picnic

March 24, 2011

I want to extend a warm Spring invitation to everyone to join us at our Compassionate Picnic fundraiser on Thursday, March 24, 2011.  Many of you met our niece, Jackie, who stayed with us the month of January during her winter term and was a volunteer intern at Compassionate Passages. She is a sophomore at Oberlin College (in OH) and an aspiring social worker.  For one of her intern projects, Jackie collaborated with some UNC students from the Chi Omega sorority and created this event that will bring the students and our community together for a fun fundraiser.

Please click here for a flyer with all the event details. Here are the highlights:

What:  Picnic, live music, and raffle

When: 5-7pm, Thursday March 24, 2011

Where: Chi Omega sorority house (pretty pale yellow house on the corner of E. Franklin St. & Hillsborough)

Many local restaurants are donating food so we'll have a "potluck picnic" including chicken, pizza, burritos, sandwiches, pimento cheese biscuits, and pasta.  Picnic tickets are only $5 (for all ages).

We have three nice raffle prizes:

-- an Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device with 6" Display and Wi-Fi

-- a free weekend camping rental from Townsend & Bertram: 1 tent, 2 backpacks, 2 sleeping bags, and 2 sleeping pads

-- kid's gift bag: an iPod shuffle, a variety of 10 books, a Twilight game, and temporary tattoos

Raffle tickets are only $1 and you do not need to be present to win. Each prize is a separate raffle so purchase tickets for the specific prize(s) you’d like to win.

For those of you with children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district, our event will officially kick off the start of spring break (and no cooking for mom!). This will be a very casual event, so feel free to catch a bite to eat and then dash off to baseball practice, a tennis match, or other activity.

Here's how you can participate in our fundraiser event:

1) Bring your family and friends to the picnic!  If you know you will attend, please consider purchasing your picnic tickets in advance to help us plan.

2) Buy raffle tickets!  You could be one of our lucky prize winners by simply buying some raffle tickets in advance or at the picnic. Remember, you do not need to be present to win.

3) Spread the word about the picnic!  Please invite others to the picnic by forwarding the flyer.

4) Volunteer on the day of the event!  Please let me know if you have an hour or two and would like to help out that day. Volunteers will be needed from 1-8pm.  Kids are welcome too -- Tyler will be setting up chairs/tables, etc. This could also be an opportunity for high school students who need service learning/volunteer hours.

Thank you for helping make this a successful event so Compassionate Passages can continue supporting dying children and their families in our local community and around the world.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing you at the Compassionate Picnic!
